If you choose to drink alcohol, do so moderately and responsibly. Excessive drinking can affect your health, relationships, and your daily life. This website reflects the currently available science and provides information to support you in making informed choices and avoiding harm.

Everyone’s relationship with alcohol is different. For some people and on some occasions, the best option may be not to drink. If you have concerns about your own situation and how drinking may affect you, it is best to consult a health professional who can help and advise you.

The Facts About Drinking Alcohol

The alcohol we drink in beer, wine, spirits and other drinks is ethanol, produced from fruits, grains, and vegetables. All contain ethanol although the final concentration (percent alcohol by volume or ABV) varies by beverage.

To help you understand how much alcohol you are drinking, governments around the world define how much alcohol is in a “standard” drink. Whether you drink beer, wine, or spirits, a “standard” drink always contains the same amount of alcohol (in grams).

How Alcohol Affects Your Health

Many people enjoy drinking as part of socializing, to celebrate important occasions, or with a meal.  But alcohol can also be misused. It is important to understand how it affects the body. Knowing your limits can help you avoid harm.

How much you drink determines the effect of alcohol will have on you.  But who you are and how you drink also matter.

Drinking Within a Healthy Lifestyle

Science tells us that for most adults who choose to drink alcohol, doing so moderately can be part of a healthy lifestyle. Overall, moderate drinkers live at least as long as people who do not drink, and they are at lower risk of some common diseases.

The key to moderation is understanding how much you drink and knowing your limits.  It also means knowing when not to drink.  Moderation also means being aware of how your drinking may affect those around you.

How risky is your drinking?

Do you ever regret how much you drank the night before?
Has anyone told you that you may be drinking too much?
Have you every injured yourself or someone else because you were drinking?

If you have answered yes to any of these questions, your drinking may be risky.
